In November 1926 he was appointed Secretary of the Peasant Movement Commission of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee. The key role of intellectuals in Mao's China has confounded Western scholars. Were they potential dissidents or actual servants of Chinese communism? The Chinese Communist Party could not have taken over China or governed it without a coalition of forces that included the intellectuals who articulated its goals and administered its complex bureaucracy.
The propaganda created while he was ruler was so powerful that it convinced all of China, even to today, that Mao did great things for China and that he was a great ruler. This however is not true. Mao’s policies and ideas actually led to the deaths of millions and did not advance China even a little bit.
Mao Zedong, the founder of the Communist People's Republic of China, was responsible for the deaths of some 45 million Chinese, most of whom starved to death as a result of Mao's farm collectivization and industrialization policies, known as the “great leap forward”. Mao, however, supported by national propaganda, claimed that he was only partly to blame for the famine. As a result, Mao was forced to step down as President of the Chinese Communist Party on April 27, 1959, but was able to remain in his top position as Chairman of the Communist Party, with the Presidency of the party and the state transferred to Liu Shaoqi. Mao already had appeared prominently on propaganda posters as far back as the 1940s, despite his ambiguous warnings against a personality cult.
